Groups - Northwest USA

 

Here you'll find links to writers' groups in the Northwestern USA, more specifically, in the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. They are organized below by state.

    Idaho

  • Coeur du Bois - this is the Boise, Idaho chapter of the Romance Writers of America.
  • Idaho Press League - this group promotes journalistic excellence in Idaho with various events, awards and scholarships.
  • Idaho Writer's League - founded in 1940, this statewide organization has chapters in six urban centers, each of which sponsors meetings, courses and events.
  • The Cabin - their mission is to inspire a love of reading, writing and discourse. They sponsor writing camps and workshops as well as readings.

    Montana

  • Authors of the Flathead - this group of writers from Northwest Montana offers workshops, critique groups and an annual conference. They meet on the first three Thursdays of every month from 7-9 PM at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell.
  • Montana Romance Writers - the Montana chapter of the Romance Writers of America, this group hosts an annual conference and sponsors an annual writing contest.

    Oregon

  • Central Oregon Writers Guild - this group offers education and support for Central Oregon writers through meetings, critique groups and workshops.
  • Oregon Authors - this group provides access to information and resources about authors in Oregon. You'll want to check out their comprehensive list of readers and writers groups in the state.
  • Oregon Writers' Colony - this group "offers support to writers in all stages of their writing careers, from novices to published authors. Members benefit from classes, inspiration from teachers and colleagues, and access to Colonyhouse, a lovely writing retreat on the Oregon Coast".
  • Willamette Writers - this group has been around since 1965 and has seven chapters throughout the state. See website for details.

    Washington

  • Pacific Northwest Writers Association - their mission is "is to develop writing talent through education, accessibility to the publishing industry, and participation in an interactive, vital writer community".  They sponsor workshops, contests and regular meetings.
  • Skagit Valley Writers League - since 1958 the SVWL has been supporting writers in the Skagit Valley. The league sponsors speakers, contests and workshops as well as hosting twice monthly meetings at the Burlington Public Library.
  • Spokane Authors and Self-Publishers - this group meets at 2 PM on the first Thursday of every month at the Golden Corral on Division Street in Spokane.

    Wyoming

  • Bearlodge Writers - this group meets on the first and third Thursdays of every month at the Crook County Library in Sundance, Wyoming. Bearlodge has a very interesting website.
  • Wyoming Press Association - founded in 1899, the WPA "champion(s) the cause of open government while representing the state's newspapers".
  • Wyoming Writers, Inc. - created in 1974 to "create a community for writers in our wide-open, sparsely populated state". They sponsor an annual conference.  
  • WyoPoets - this group for Wyoming Poets sponsors the annual Eugene V. Shea National Contest. They also publish periodic chapbooks.
