Here is a collection of links to writers groups in the province of Alberta, Canada. Province wide groups are listed at the top. The rest are listed by town or city. For groups without websites, check out the Critiquing Groups link below.

    Calgary

  • Alexandra Writers' Centre Society - this group offers workshops, courses, seminars, discussion groups and more. Membership is $60 a year, $40 for youth.
  • Calgary Meetup Writing Groups - you'll find a good number of writers groups within 25 miles of Calgary at this link.
  • Imaginative Fiction Writers Association - this group focuses on imaginative fiction and meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7 PM at the Sentry Box in Calgary. Membership is $20 a year. Click on their About link for more details.
  • Single Onion - poetry readings often including open mike meets the third Thursday of every month at Shelf Life Books at 7:30 PM.

    Edmonton

  • Edmonton Speculative Fiction Writers' Group - this group jokingly calls itself The Cult of Pain. Focus is on speculative and science fiction. Meeting times and locations vary so check the website.
  • Edmonton Writers Group - fun and work, humour and support for all genres. Meets on the first and third Thursday of very month at 7 PM at the Capilano Branch of the Edmonton Public Library.
  • Stroll of Poets Society - the Stroll sponsors a variety of readings and workshops and publishes an annual anthology. Membership is $25 a year.
  • Writers Beyond Borders - provides support for multilingual and immigrant writers in Canada. The group also has a blog. The group is based in Edmonton.

    Grande Prairie

  • Cygnet Writers Group - this group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at the Grande Prairie Public Library at 1:30 PM.

    Lethbridge

  • River Bottom Writers - this group meets every Thursday evening at 7 PM at Moose Hall. Some members informally get together at Tim Hortons on Saturdays and Sundays at Tim Hortons between 7 and 9 AM.

    Red Deer

  • Writers' Ink - this group meets every Tuesday at 7 PM to share writing and constructive criticism. Meetings are held in the old farmhouse at Sunnybrook Farm. The website has an extensive list of writing contests.
