Groups and Clubs





There are lots of courses available for budding writers. Most colleges and universities have a creative writing division so you should check your local educational institutions if you want a classroom setting type of program. The courses listed here are mostly online.
  • Freelance Zone - this website lists courses on creative writing available at colleges and universities across the United States. They are organized by state.
  • Gotham Writers - Gotham Writers offers writing course in New York City a well as online. Courses begin in October and a free one hour sample class can be attended. Pricing is similar to university courses.
  • Great Courses: The Secrets of Great Mystery and Suspense Fiction - a course of 36 half hour lectures presented by Professor David Schmid at the State University of New York, Buffalo.
  • How to Write a Book in 30 Days - this is a terrific article from The Guardian newspaper that includes worksheets you can print off to use as a template for writing a novel. Click here for the worksheets!
  • Institute of Children's Literature - offers courses to adults interested in writing for children. This is an extensive website with a lot of useful information on writing for the children's market.
  • James Patterson Teaches Writing - one of the best selling authors in the world, James Patterson is now offering a course for writers. Here is a review by Joyce Maynard, author of Labor Day.
  • Northwest Institute of Literary Arts - located on Whidbey Island in Washington State, NILA offers a number of courses and is the first organization that is not a college or university to offer a Maste of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. It is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council and recognized by the US Department of Education.
  • Port Moody Writers Workshop -  two workshops for writers held at the Kyle Center in Port Moody, BC, Canada. Fees range from $95-110 per semester.
  • Premium Zoetrope Fiction Writing - a beginner and a premium fiction writing course is offered online through Gotham Writers. They are both 11 week courses. They are priced about the same as university courses.
  • Simon Fraser University Writing and Communications - SFU offers over 100 writing courses in its Continuing Studies Program. Taught at the downtown Vancouver campus.
  • Story is a State of Mind - a self-directed course from author Sarah Selecky. This course is recommended by Margaret Atwood. Cost is $250.
  • Vancouver School of Writing - VSW has a number of inexpensive courses taught at community centers around Vancouver, B.C. as well as online courses.
  • Writers' Workshop - based in Seattle, Washington, The Writers' Workshop offers a variety of courses on writing in Seattle and online.
  • Writing Life Women's Writing Circle - poet Mary Anne Moore offers a nine month home study course as well as a six week writing circle. There are fees involved.
  • Writing Workshops With Robert J. Sawyer - Sawyer is a Hugo and Nebula award winning sci-fi author and offers periodic workshops. Check the website for details.
